Current Projects at Newtown Park
The Foundation is currently working with the City of Johns Creek to complete several renovations and improvement projects in the next few years. These projects include:
Pond Area
Until recently, the area south of the pond was overrun with Kudzu and various invasive plant species. Kudzu-Free Communities is now in their fourth year of eradicating the kudzu from the four acres below the pond. The damage to the trees is still evident, and it will take a few years of growth and supplemental planting to restore the natural eco-system to the woodland area. The invasive plant species are also being treated frequently to allow pines and hardwoods to take root.
Future plans for this area include adding an outdoor classroom next to the pond, and building walking trails (with natural mulch surface) throughout the reclaimed four acres. New stairs, hardscaping and landscaping will also be part of this restoration and improvement project.
A new aerator has been installed in the pond, and invasive pond plants are being monitored and treated monthly as needed.
Newtown Community House
Newtown Community House
The small, concrete block building located in the northwest corner of the park, has served the community for over fifty years. Despite its age and poor condition, this ‘little-house-that-could’ has been utilized by the community over the years for meetings, family gatherings, parties, classes, and community functions. The community house is about to undergo a major renovation inside and out, and become a very functional and more attractive resource for the community. The renovation of the building will begin in Spring, 2009. The Newtown Community House was not included on the Newtown Park Master Plan of 2006 because at the time of the study, the original Georgia DOT plans for Old Alabama Road indicated that the house would need to be torn down to accommodate the road expansion. This is no longer the case, and now that the City of Johns Creek is taking over the road improvement project, the community house will not only remain in tact, but the city is adding much needed sidewalks in front of the Community House and the Newtown School building. With projected renovation costs estimated at well over 3 million dollars to transform the Historic Newtown School into a community center, capturing a little more community space in the near term makes the community house renovation a much needed project.
Recreation Storage Building
At the end of the parking lot adjacent to the dog park and basketball court, a new recreation storage building will be erected beginning in the Spring of 2009. This project will create a facility to house recreation equipment for Newtown Recreation and the City. When the building is completed, the red storage trailer next to the old school, will be removed.
